Working the queue — holding, merging, pinning and spam

Triage every day: hold what needs a look, merge duplicates without losing votes, pin what matters, and record a vote somebody gave you on a call.

Triage is the screen you work in. Everything new across your boards, in one list, with a search box and filters by board, category and status.

Each row has a … menu, and everything in it applies on the click rather than after a pause.

Holding a post

Hold for review takes a post off the public board without deleting it. The row tints amber and gains a HELD chip; its public address stops showing it.

Use it for something you need to read properly, or that you are not ready to have customers see while you decide. Releasing it puts it straight back.

Pinning

Pin puts a post at the top of its board, above posts with more votes. That is the point of a pin — one that only wins when the post would have been first anyway does nothing.

One pinned post leads a board. You can also pin a comment inside a thread, which is how you put your own answer at the top of a long discussion.

Merging duplicates

The same idea arrives three times. Merge with… on a post offers the posts that look like duplicates of it, by how similar their titles are — not every post on the board.

If nothing is close enough it says so. That is the honest answer, not a broken screen.

Pick one and the screen tells you the vote count the kept post will have. That number is counted, not added up: somebody who voted for both posts counts once, so the total is often smaller than the two added together. Nobody's vote is duplicated and nobody's vote is lost.

Swap decides which post survives. The survivor keeps its address, its title and its comment thread, so this is a real choice. The absorbed post's address redirects to the survivor afterwards, rather than going dead — anyone following an old link lands on the live discussion.

Everyone who voted for the absorbed post is told where their vote went, so a merge does not look to them like their idea disappearing.

Spam and deleting

Mark as spam takes a post off the board and out of your queue.

Delete is permanent. The dialog names the post and counts what goes with it — the comments and the votes — rather than asking whether you are sure. You get to read the consequence instead of confirming a verb.

Voting for someone

Somebody tells you on a call that they want a feature. Vote for someone on the post's Votes card records it against them: type a few letters of their name, pick them, and the count moves.

Their row then shows the vote was added by you rather than by them, so your board stays an honest record of who asked for what — and they get the status email when it ships, like anyone else who voted.

The queue's search uses whole words rather than exact letters, so invoices finds a post about an invoice. The count under the box tells you how many matched.
