Serving your board from your own domain
Two DNS records, and we watch them until they resolve — with the exact value to fix when one is wrong.
Your board is live on a nolby address from the moment you create it. Pointing your own domain at it means visitors stay on your site, and the search ranking those pages earn belongs to you rather than to us.
You need a subdomain of a domain you control — feedback.yourcompany.com,
ideas.yourcompany.com — and access to wherever that domain's DNS is managed.
That is usually your registrar, or Cloudflare if you moved it there.
A root domain will not work. yourcompany.com on its own cannot carry the
record this needs, and it is almost always already serving the site you are
linking from. Use a subdomain.
Add the hostname
Open Custom domain in your workspace and type the hostname you want. You can
paste a whole address — https://feedback.yourcompany.com/ — and we will reduce
it to the part that matters.
Nothing is live yet. What you get is the two records to create.
Create the two records
| Type | Name | Value |
|---|---|---|
CNAME | feedback | cname.nolby.co |
TXT | _nolby-challenge.feedback | nolby-verify=… |
The screen prints both, each with a copy button, and the TXT value is unique
to your workspace and that hostname — so copy it rather than typing it.
The CNAME is what sends the hostname to us and what your certificate is issued
against. The TXT proves you control the hostname, which is what stops anyone
else claiming an address that is yours.
The name column is what most DNS hosts ask for. If yours wants the full
hostname instead, use feedback.yourcompany.com and
_nolby-challenge.feedback.yourcompany.com.
On Cloudflare, set the CNAME to DNS only — the grey cloud, not the orange
one. A proxied record makes Cloudflare answer for the hostname instead of us,
and your certificate will never be issued.
Watch them resolve
You do not have to press anything or come back later. The screen checks on its own while it waits, and tells you about each record separately:
- RESOLVING — correct, nothing to do.
- NOT FOUND — nothing exists at that name yet. Either it has not been created, or it has not propagated.
- WRONG VALUE — something is there and it is not us. The screen shows what it found beside what it should be, so you can see which character is off.
DNS changes usually arrive within a few minutes and can take up to an hour. A record still showing red immediately after you save it at your DNS host is normal.
Once both are green, your certificate is issued automatically — usually inside a minute — and your board is live on your address over HTTPS. It renews itself.
Your nolby address keeps working
yourworkspace.nolby.co does not stop serving. Every link you have already
sent, and every address in an email we send on your behalf, keeps working.
Search engines are told your custom domain is the real one, so the two addresses do not compete with each other and the ranking accrues to you.
If you embed the widget
A board on your own domain does not change where the widget loads from. If your site sets a Content-Security-Policy, the Custom domain screen prints the two origins it needs, ready to copy. Without them the widget fails silently in the browser rather than reporting anything to us.
Changing or removing it
Disconnecting takes your board off that address straight away, and anyone following a link to it sees a page saying it is not connected. Your board stays live on its nolby address.
Leave the DNS records where they are and connecting the same hostname again
takes a minute — the TXT value does not change.
One custom domain at a time. To move to a different hostname, disconnect the current one first.
